In a world where healthcare is increasingly driven by profit, Dr. Eni Olorunda of Elohim Eye Specialist Clinic in Abeokuta chose a different path.

When a patient couldn’t afford a procedure at his private practice, he offered to perform the same surgery for free at a public hospital, proving that for some, the patient truly comes before the money.

A Decision That Defined a Man

Sometimes, a person’s reputation is not built by what people say about him, but by the quiet decisions he makes when nobody is watching.

That is why Dr. Eni Olorunda of Elohim Eye Specialist Clinic, Abeokuta, has remained in the mind of one patient for over two decades.

Beyond his professional identity as an ophthalmologist, Dr. Olorunda left an impression that transcended his medical expertise, a testament to the fact that for him, the patient truly came before the money.

The Story Behind the Memory

The story begins circa 2002/2003, when a young man developed a cyst on his eyelid. It was not painful, but it was embarrassing.

An eye cyst, often a chalazion resulting from a blocked oil-producing gland, can create a noticeable swelling that becomes impossible to ignore.

The patient became so self-conscious that he felt everyone was staring at the lump, and photographs became a source of distress.

Eventually, he decided to seek help.

He discovered that Elohim Eye Specialist Clinic was highly regarded for eye care in Abeokuta and approached Dr. Olorunda.

The cyst was excised, and the problem was solved, or so he thought.

A Return, a Problem, and a Surprising Solution

After some time, the lump returned. The patient went back to Elohim, but this time, there was a significant obstacle; he did not have enough money for the procedure.

He explained his situation to Dr. Olorunda.

What happened next is the reason he has never forgotten this man. Dr. Olorunda immediately told him not to worry about the bill.

Then, he suggested something that, to the patient, spoke volumes about his character; the patient could go to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, and have the procedure done there.

When the patient expressed his fears about not wanting to take chances, Dr. Olorunda reassured him: “You would be fine because I am the same person who would perform the procedure.”

A Lesson in Selflessness

Think about that for a moment. Dr. Olorunda had a private practice. The patient had already approached his private practice. He had a medical problem that required a procedure. He had admitted that he could not afford the procedure at that particular time and would wait to get some money.

Yet Dr. Olorunda’s first concern was not how to keep the patient within his private establishment and collect a fee.

His concern was how to get the patient treated.

A Legacy of Quiet Integrity

Dr. Olorunda did not need to do what he did.

He could have turned the patient away, as many would have.

He could have insisted on payment upfront.

He could have prioritized his private practice’s bottom line over the patient’s well-being. Instead, he chose humanity over money.

In a healthcare system where many Nigerians struggle to afford even basic medical care, Dr. Olorunda’s decision stands as a rare and powerful reminder that there are still those who practice medicine not as a business, but as a calling.

The patient, Kayode Ogunjobi, recounts this story not just as a grateful patient, but as a witness to the kind of integrity that defines true greatness.

This story is a reminder that in a world increasingly driven by profit, there are still those who choose humanity.

For young Nigerians who may be tempted to pursue wealth at the expense of integrity, Dr. Olorunda’s example offers a different path: one that values service over selfishness, compassion over currency, and the well-being of others over personal gain.

It is also a reminder that the true measure of a person is not what they have, but what they give.

Dr. Olorunda gave his patient not just a procedure, but a lesson in humanity, one that has lasted over two decades.

As Nigerians, we must demand more of our healthcare system, but we must also celebrate and emulate those who, like Dr. Olorunda, choose to put patients first.

It is a lesson that extends beyond medicine,.to every profession, every interaction, and every opportunity to make a difference.
