OsunDecides2026: Gunshots Trigger Panic at Osogbo Collation Centre as Results Are Collated

Sporadic gunshots triggered panic around the Union Baptist Primary School in Osogbo, Osun State, on Saturday night as collation of results from the governorship election continued.

The incident occurred at the premises serving as the Ataoja D Ward 4 collation centre, with gunfire heard between about 9:15pm and 9:30pm.

Security personnel were reportedly responsible for the shots, which were fired into the air. Canisters were also released within the premises, sending people around the centre fleeing for safety.

The reason for the shooting was not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report. The gunfire reportedly continued for more than 15 minutes while collation activities were underway across Osun.

The development comes as election results continue to emerge from the state’s 30 local government areas and are being uploaded and collated through the electoral process.

Earlier in the day, the election recorded several incidents involving security personnel, voting technology and disputes at some locations, although voting generally proceeded across the state.

At Ede North, a malfunctioning BVAS disrupted proceedings at a polling unit, while supporters of the African Action Congress candidate protested against calls for patience after officials said a replacement machine had been deployed.

There were also tense moments in Modakeke, where the police confirmed that an officer had been arrested after an accidental tear-gas discharge at a Registration Area Centre.

The police said the Modakeke incident resulted from the officer’s negligence and insisted that it did not occur at a polling unit.

Meanwhile, the political contest has produced significant results from several prominent polling units as collation continues.

The latest figures available before the incident put Ademola Adeleke of Accord ahead of APC’s Bola Oyebamiji, with the final outcome still dependent on the completion of official collation and declaration by INEC.
