​Former Cambridge Professor Jason Ardata Found Dead Amid Plagiarism Storm

​LONDON — Jason Arday, the trailblazing former Cambridge University professor who resigned last week following intense scrutiny over allegations of academic misconduct, was found dead Friday at his home in south London. He was 41.

​Metropolitan Police officers and emergency services rushed to an address in Battersea shortly after 3 p.m. following reports of an unresponsive man. Arday was pronounced dead at the scene.

​A police spokesperson stated that the death is currently being treated as unexpected, though not believed to be suspicious. A file is being prepared for the coroner.

​Arday made history in 2023 when he was appointed professor of sociology of education at Cambridge, becoming the youngest Black professor ever to hold the prestigious post. Celebrated widely as a diversity pioneer—having famously overcome severe childhood developmental hurdles, not learning to speak until age 11 or read and write until 18—his career faced a sudden and dramatic unraveling last month.

​Public accusations emerged online, alleging that Arday had plagiarized portions of his doctoral thesis and CV, alongside discrepancies regarding past academic positions. In response, Cambridge University launched a formal internal investigation into his appointment and tenure.

​Arday stepped down on August 5, citing an “unrelenting level of public scrutiny” and stating that the toxic media climate had taken a heavy toll on his physical and mental well-being.

​His death comes just days after the U.S. release of his memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things. University officials and publishers have expressed shock as investigators continue to look into the tragic end to a once-celebrated academic career.
