BARKIN LADI, PLATEAU STATE — Another deadly collapse at an unlicensed mining pit in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, has claimed the lives of nine miners, deepening a mounting humanitarian and safety crisis across Plateau State.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening at approximately 7:00 PM, plunging the local community into panic and grief. According to local sources, the victims were deep underground when the unstable pit suddenly caved in, trapping them beneath heavy earth and rock.

Eyewitnesses reported that initial rescue efforts by local residents and fellow miners managed to pull several individuals from the debris. While initial counts confirmed seven fatalities at the scene, two additional victims succumbed to severe injuries shortly after, bringing the final death toll to nine. Several other miners remain hospitalized with varying degrees of trauma.

Albert Danlami, a local resident who witnessed the immediate aftermath, described the scene as devastating. “The incident caused widespread panic as residents rushed to the site to help recover the bodies of those trapped underground,” Danlami said.

The tragedy has once again brought the perils of unregulated mineral extraction into sharp focus. Rwang Tengwong, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the incident, noting that frantic rescue efforts ultimately ended in tragedy.

Local authorities and community leaders have reiterated that the affected site was operating illegally, in direct defiance of a state-wide ban on uncertified mining operations. Under Nigerian law, solid mineral exploitation requires a formal license from the Federal Government—a credential the operators at the Kassa site reportedly lacked.

A Escalating Crisis in Plateau State

Wednesday’s collapse compounds an already alarming year for mining safety and security in Plateau State. Unregulated operations, structural failures, and armed incursions have pushed the cumulative mining-related death toll to at least 54 lives lost since January 2026.

The state has witnessed multiple catastrophic events over the past eight months:

  • February 18, 2026: At least 37 miners died from severe carbon monoxide poisoning and suffocation after entering a poorly ventilated shaft at a dormant lead and zinc mine in the Kampani/Zurak community of Wase LGA.
  • June 16, 2026: Five young miners were shot and killed during an overnight armed attack on a mining site in Gero village, Gyel District of Jos South LGA.
  • July 30, 2026: Three miners were ambushed and killed by gunmen while returning home from a local mining site in Fubok, Daffo District of Bokkos LGA.

Independent media watchdogs, including HumAngle Media, note that security vulnerabilities surrounding artisanal mining camps have deteriorated significantly this year. Armed raids on mining environments have roughly tripled, with at least six distinct attacks recorded between January and July alone.

As families in Kassa mourn their dead, civil society groups and community leaders are renewing calls for stricter enforcement of mining bans, improved oversight by federal and state regulators, and urgent interventions to curb the dangerous allure of illegal artisanal mining amid severe economic pressures.
