JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — A 21-year-old Jacksonville State University men’s basketball player from Nigeria is facing severe criminal charges following his arrest by local law enforcement.
Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, a 7-foot center who recently joined the JSU program, was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, and charged with first-degree rape. He is currently being held at the Calhoun County Jail pending a bond hearing. In addition to the criminal charges, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration hold on him.
Investigation Origin and Campus Response
According to the Jacksonville Police Department, the investigation began early Wednesday morning following a welfare check request from a concerned friend regarding a woman at a residence on Ivy Row NE. Responding officers encountered Adegboyega and the victim at the scene. Following interviews with both parties, investigators placed Adegboyega under arrest.
Police Chief Marcus Wood emphasized that the incident was isolated, assuring the community that there is no broader threat to public safety.
In an official statement, the JSU athletics department confirmed the development:
”We are aware of the arrest. In response, the individual has been suspended from the men’s basketball team. Because the matter did not occur on campus and remains under active investigation by the Jacksonville Police Department, questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Jacksonville Police Department.”
Adegboyega’s player profile has since been scrubbed from the university’s athletics website.

Adegboyega, who has competed under the name Daniel Tobiloba during his collegiate career, committed to Jacksonville State in May. His journey through college basketball includes stops at multiple institutions:
