Team Nigeria’s track and field campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games reached a thrilling crescendo on Thursday at Scotstoun Stadium, as Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo punched their tickets to the men’s 400m final in spectacular fashion.
Ogazi put on a masterclass in the opening semifinal heat, delivering a blistering run of 44.52 seconds. Not only did the dominant performance secure him an outright victory, but it also marked the quickest time across all semifinal heats, firmly establishing the young quarter-miler as a leading gold-medal favorite. He left Botswana’s Lee Bhekempilo Eppie (45.26s) and Jamaica’s Zandrion Barnes (45.38s) trailing in his wake.
Nigeria’s joy was doubled in the third semifinal when debutant Edidiong Udo put up a gritty, tactical display from lane eight. Crossing the line initially in third with a time of 45.53 seconds, Udo was elevated to second place following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson. The double qualification guarantees Nigeria a formidable two-pronged attack in the ultimate medal race.
Meanwhile, the nation’s sprinting pedigree was further underlined by world record holder Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles. Amusan made a thunderous statement by searing through her heat in 12.19 seconds. Though aided by a +3.8 m/s tailwind, the sensational mark stands as the fastest time ever clocked in the event’s history at the Commonwealth Games, easing her past South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.50s) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (12.69s) into the final.
In the women’s 400m category, Ella Onojuvwevwo kept the country’s flag flying high by winning her semifinal heat in 51.47 seconds. However, it was the end of the road for veterans Patience Okon-George (53.21s) and Esther Elo Joseph (53.26s), who finished fifth and sixth respectively in their tightly contested heat.
As attention shifts to the finals, Team Nigeria stands poised for a historic medal haul on the tracks of Glasgow.
