Man Sentenced for Stealing Police Armoured Vehicle

​KUMASI — A brazen daylight joyride that began with a sudden stomach ailment and ended in a tactical highway interception has culminated in a one-month prison sentence for a 26-year-old man at the Kwadaso Circuit Court.

​Ebenezer Frimpong, an unemployed native of Antwi Agyeikrom, was handed the custodial sentence by His Honour Jephthah Appau after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a bizarre April heist involving a high-security Ghana Police Service armoured truck.

​The dramatic sequence of events unfolded on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi was tasked with ferrying the heavy-duty vehicle—bearing registration number GP 1131—from Nkawie to a designated workshop in Kumasi for routine maintenance. En route, the officer was suddenly overcome by a severe stomach upset, prompting him to pull over near the bustling Nkawie Market to source quick relief from a local pharmacy.

​According to court proceedings, Frimpong seized the opportunistic window, slipped into the driver’s seat of the idling military-grade hardware, and abruptly steered the machine onto the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi highway.

​The sudden theft triggered an immediate high-stakes regional alert. Backed by a coordinated network of regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) motor riders and specialized tactical units, law enforcement units launched a rapid pursuit. The chase was swiftly concluded approximately 30 minutes later at Mim, near Abuakwa, where the suspect was safely cornered and apprehended without structural damage to the state asset.

​Having initially entered a not-guilty plea during his May arraignment, Frimpong’s legal proceedings were temporarily frozen to allow for a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Medical officers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital ultimately cleared him fit to stand trial.

​Returning to the dock, Frimpong dramatically switched his plea to guilty. In handing down the sentence, Justice Appau noted leniency, citing the convict’s status as a youthful first-time offender who spared the judicial system prolonged litigation by acknowledging his culpability.
