AKURE — Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, have been grappling with a choking, sulphuric acid-like stench permeating the night air, prompting the Ondo State Ministry of Environment to launch an aggressive clampdown on environmental offenders.
The offensive odour, which has heavily impacted commercial and residential layouts, has been traced by preliminary government investigations to a toxic source. Authorities report that the foul air stems from the clandestine, illegal discharge of untreated industrial effluent and hazardous waste directly into vital natural waterways.
The polluted stream snakes through high-density and prominent areas, originating from Ijapo Estate and cutting across Edo Lodge, Fiwasaye, and straight down to the territory situated directly behind the El-Shaddai Residential Estate in Alagbaka.
A Clear and Present Danger to Public Health
Speaking on the development, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, expressed deep concern over the grave environmental degradation and health hazards imposed on unsuspecting citizens.
Environmental health experts note that exposure to unmonitored sulphuric emissions and chemical runoffs can trigger severe respiratory discomfort, eye irritations, and long-term systemic health complications, particularly during nocturnal atmospheric inversions when heavy gases linger close to the ground.
Beyond immediate health threats, the reckless dumping constitutes a blatant contravention of the state’s environmental sanitation and pollution control laws.
High-Powered Investigative Panel Constituted
In a swift bid to restore sanity and safety, the Ondo State Government has constituted a high-powered investigative task force. The team has been handed a strict mandate to:
- Track down the exact industrial or commercial originators of the toxic waste.
- Gather watertight, credible forensic and physical evidence.
- Ensure that every individual, corporate body, or syndicate found culpable is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Government Calls for Public Vigilance
While field officers comb the affected corridors, the Ministry has urged residents to stay calm but maintain heightened vigilance. The government is appealing to community members, estate associations, and local watchdogs to immediately report suspicious waste disposal activities or clandestine night-time pumping of liquids into local streams.
”Environmental pollution in any form is a grave offence against the people and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the Ministry emphasized in a statement signed by Ayanleye Abimbola, Deputy Director of Public Complaints, Control and Sanitation (DPCC&S).
Reports of environmental violations can be channeled directly to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment to ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier Sunshine State for all inhabitants.
