Slain NURTW Chieftain Laid To Rest As Lagos School Suspends Classes

​Lagos, Nigeria — A sombre mood enveloped the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Tuesday as family members, friends, and union members gathered in Ketu to bid a final farewell to Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya. Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was buried amidst emotional tributes following his tragic death from gunshot injuries sustained in an ambush.

​The violent attack occurred on Sunday evening when unidentified gunmen opened fire on Ajiboye’s vehicle as he was leaving the Fadeyi neighbourhood, where he had gone to visit childhood friends. Sources close to the union revealed that three other occupants in the vehicle sustained critical gunshot wounds and remain hospitalised as medical personnel battle to save their lives.

​In a rare show of community respect, Great Josade School—a private educational institution located in Ereko, Fadeyi, near the late union leader’s residence—temporarily suspended all academic activities on Tuesday. A banner bearing Ajiboye’s photograph and an obituary message was prominently displayed at the school entrance, reading, “Please no school tomorrow in order to honour our amiable brother and father.”

​Tributes have continued to pour in from across the transport sector. The Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle (also known as Sego), expressed profound grief over the loss, describing Ajiboye as a steadfast ally, dependable friend, and a foundational pillar of “TeamSego.”

​Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the assailants. State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible for the attack, while the precise motive behind the deadly shooting remains undetermined.
