LOS ANGELES — Christopher Nolan has done it again, rewriting box office history as his latest cinematic epic, The Odyssey, hauled in an estimated $264.1 million globally during its opening weekend.
The staggering debut marks the largest worldwide opening of the Oscar-winning director’s career, comfortably eclipsing the $249 million launch of his 2012 Batman finale, The Dark Knight Rises. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the grand-scale adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem achieved this milestone despite carrying a rare R rating for a blockbuster of its scale.
North American ticket sales contributed $124.5 million to the total, securing the third-largest domestic opening weekend of 2026 behind only animated features Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Internationally, the film raked in $139.6 million across 73 territories, setting new career-high openings for Nolan in 48 countries, including France, Italy, Brazil, and India. Premium formats proved vital to the rollout, with IMAX and large-format screens accounting for over half of domestic revenues.
Defying Backlash and Review-Bombing
The historic box office triumph arrives amid a wave of intense online discourse. Prior to its release, the film faced vocal criticism from some social media commentators over casting choices—specifically Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as the Greek soldier Sinon.
Nolan and members of the cast firmly defended the creative direction, with Nyong’o emphasizing that the project is a mythological adaptation whose cast mirrors the diversity of the modern world. In tandem with the online casting debates, the movie also encountered clusters of low-score audience ratings on aggregate platforms, which industry analysts flagged as coordinated review-bombing.
Political figures, including Elon Musk and various right-wing commentators, also weighed in online with criticisms directed at the production’s artistic choices and cultural framing. However, the online resistance failed to dent mainstream enthusiasm. General audiences embraced the film, awarding it a strong “A” CinemaScore alongside a 95% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Produced on a reported budget of $250 million and notable as the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, The Odyssey has quickly proven its commercial viability. With strong word-of-mouth momentum and premium screen dominance, the epic is well on its way to weathering the initial digital storm and establishing itself as one of the definitive cinematic events of the year.
