BETHESDA, Md. — United States Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the arrival of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, marking a rare milestone in American history as the first baby born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.
Born on Sunday morning at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, the newborn joins a bustling household that includes older siblings Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.
In a joint statement shared on social media, the couple expressed gratitude for the medical staff while sharing their family’s joy.
”We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the statement read.
The family also extended specific thanks to the military doctors and personnel at Walter Reed alongside the White House Medical Unit for their exceptional care.
A 19th-Century Precedent
The arrival of Alec Neel breaks a political and domestic dry spell spanning over a century and a half. Not since 1870 has a serving vice president welcomed a child while in office, when Schuyler Colfax—who served under President Ulysses S. Grant—and his wife, Ellen, celebrated the birth of their son, Schuyler Colfax III.
The high-profile birth places the Vance family squarely in the national spotlight, aligning closely with the Vice President’s vocal, public advocacy for family growth and American pronatalist policies. Vance, 41, and Usha, 40, met while studying at Yale Law School and graduated in 2013 before marrying the following year.
President Donald Trump took to social media shortly after the announcement to congratulate the family, posting an image of the newborn alongside members of the Vance family and writing, “A perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family”.
