As anticipation builds for one of Hollywood’s most ambitious biblical projects, screenwriter Randall Wallace has pulled back the curtain on the origins of The Resurrection of the Christ, revealing a stark spiritual warning issued by director Mel Gibson before penning a single line of the script.
Wallace, who previously collaborated with Gibson on cinematic milestones like Braveheart and We Were Soldiers, shared the disclosure during an appearance on Raymond Arroyo’s podcast, Arroyo Grande. According to Wallace, it was he who initially pitched the concept of a full-scale resurrection narrative to Gibson while the pair were promoting Hacksaw Ridge in 2016.
While the 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ concluded with a brief, highly demanded glimpse of the empty tomb, Gibson recognized that an expanded narrative required a pure motivation.
”If we do this, it can’t be for the money, and it can’t be to get back at people that have hated us or wronged us,” Wallace recalled Gibson stating during a thoughtful pause.
Following that reflection, Gibson offered a sobering prediction to his longtime collaborator. “Then he said, ‘You know, Satan’s going to come after you,'” Wallace recounted, noting that the ominous remark ultimately sparked a deep, multi-year creative partnership centered on grace.
Production and Release Outlook
The multi-year writing process—crafted by Gibson, Wallace, and Donal Gibson—has finally materialized on screen. Production wrapped earlier this year at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
Distributed by Lionsgate, the massive undertaking has been split into a two-part cinematic event:
- The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One: Scheduled to premiere on May 6, 2027
- The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two: Set for release on May 25, 2028
Promising a fresh portrayal that dives deep into canonical roots alongside surreal, otherworldly realms explored in early drafts, Gibson has described the project as a monumental capstone to his career. Wallace echoes that sentiment, assuring audiences that the films will deliver an orthodox yet entirely unprecedented cinematic interpretation of Christian history’s defining moment.
