​Far-Right Activist Tommy Robinson Detained Under Counter-Terrorism Laws After Russia Trip

​LONDON — Far-right activist Tommy Robinson was detained by counter-terrorism officers at Heathrow Airport on Saturday evening after returning to the UK from Russia, sparking fresh controversy amid a week of escalating racial tensions and violent unrest across Britain and Northern Ireland.

​The 43-year-old agitator, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was held for approximately three hours under Schedule 3 of the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019. The legislation grants border officials the authority to stop, search, and detain individuals to determine if they are engaged in “hostile activity” on behalf of a foreign state.

​The Metropolitan Police confirmed the operation, stating that officers stopped a man in his 40s around 5:00 PM on Saturday following his arrival on a flight from Russia via Turkey.

​”The man was interviewed by officers and his communication devices were seized. He was subsequently released,” a Met Police spokesperson said.

​Seizure of Devices and Crowdfunding Appeals

​Taking to social media, Robinson shared photos of the official detention paperwork, declaring to his followers, “I’m a terrorist again.” He confirmed that authorities had confiscated his iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

​An administrator posting on his X (formerly Twitter) account characterized the incident as an overreach by the state, claiming it was an effort to unearth his journalistic sources.

​”They likely want to see who he is talking to, and maybe find out who his sources are,” the post read. “This is an attack on free speech, this is an attack on investigative journalism, nothing more, nothing less.”

​Robinson immediately utilized the platform to solicit financial donations from his supporters to kickstart a legal defense fund.

​Stoking Tensions From Moscow

​The airport detention follows a highly visible week for the former English Defence League (EDL) leader, who had been broadcasting heavily from Moscow. During his trip, Robinson met with Errol Musk—father of tech billionaire Elon Musk—and praised Russian society, stating to reporters that “Russia is not the enemy of Britain.”

​Despite being abroad, Robinson remained a central figure in coordinating and amplifying domestic unrest. He heavily posted about recent clashes in Southampton sparked by the death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak in police custody. Those protests resulted in injuries to 13 police officers and a police dog.

​Furthermore, Robinson used his platform to share a graphic video of a stabbing incident in Belfast involving a Sudanese suspect. He continuously published lists of planned local demonstrations, which critics and local politicians say directly fueled a wave of racist and anti-immigrant riots that saw minority-owned businesses and homes targeted in Northern Ireland.

​The lists of demonstrations gained massive traction after they were reposted by X owner Elon Musk to his 240 million followers.

​Past Legal Battles

​This is not Robinson’s first encounter with border counter-terrorism powers. In July 2024, he was stopped at the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone and subsequently charged after refusing to provide police with the PIN to his mobile phone. However, he was cleared of that terror charge later that year after a district judge ruled that the court could not be entirely certain the initial police stop was lawful.

​Additionally, Robinson served an 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court, which concluded last year, after violating an injunction that barred him from repeating defamatory claims about a Syrian refugee schoolboy.

​Legal experts note that Schedule 3 detentions require a lower threshold of evidence than standard criminal arrests and routinely conclude without formal charges. However, data recovered from Robinson’s seized communication devices could form the basis for future legal scrutiny as police continue to investigate the coordination behind the recent UK riots.
