LAGOS — Acclaimed Nigerian literary icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has publicly accused the management of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of orchestrating a calculated cover-up following the tragic death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Adichie-Esege.

In an emotional and scathing letter dated April 16, 2026, which she made public via her social media platforms on Saturday, June 13, Adichie detailed a harrowing sequence of events. She alleged that the elite healthcare facility committed gross professional negligence, falsified her son’s death certificate, and deployed legal and psychological intimidation to silence her family’s quest for accountability.

“I decided to make this public because to keep silent about Euracare’s evil is to enable it,” Adichie stated, adding that the hospital’s actions have robbed her of the peace required to mourn her child.

The Fatal Sedation Allegations

The tragedy began on January 6, 2026, when young Nkanu—one of Adichie’s twin sons with her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege—was referred to Euracare from Atlantis Pediatric Hospital. The toddler was scheduled for preparatory diagnostic procedures, including a brain MRI and a central line insertion, ahead of an emergency medical evacuation to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States.

According to Adichie, her son was “conscious, talking, and interactive” when he arrived at the hospital. However, complications arose rapidly after the administration of the sedative propofol.

Adichie alleged that on the day of the incident, Euracare’s Medical Director, Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, rushed into the catheterisation laboratory and later confessed to her that the anaesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, had given the toddler “too much propofol.”

Nkanu suffered respiratory and cardiac arrest, resulting in a severe hypoxic brain injury. He was placed on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but tragically passed away the following day, January 7, 2026.

Legal notices previously filed by the family’s counsel, led by Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), cited a complete collapse of standard care, including a failure to continuously monitor the child’s vitals and an improper administration of deep sedation without securing his airways.

Accusations of Deceit and Cover-Up

The core of Adichie’s public outrage centers on the hospital’s subsequent conduct. She disclosed that during a condolence visit to her Ikoyi residence on January 8, Dr. Majekodunmi accepted full responsibility and promised to dismiss the anaesthesiologist. However, the Medical Director allegedly ceased all communications shortly after, indicating that corporate management had taken over the narrative.

Furthermore, Adichie fiercely disputed the cause of death listed on Nkanu’s official death certificate, which Euracare registered as bacterial and fungal meningitis. The author described this diagnosis as a complete fabrication designed to mask clinical errors, insisting that the certificate must be corrected to reflect improper sedation, hypoxic brain injury, and cardiac arrest.

The author also revealed a “manipulative and implicitly threatening” message sent by a senior figure within Euracare’s ownership to a family relative. The message warned Adichie against pursuing legal action, suggesting that her public reputation would be dragged through the mud because “court cases are about winning and anybody would do anything to win.”

Battle Over the Coroner’s Inquest

In the wake of public outcry and a direct investigation ordered by the Lagos State Government through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), Euracare initially applied for a coroner’s inquest in January to address “rumours of negligence.”

However, Adichie noted that the facility has since aggressively tried to stall the process. On May 26, 2026, the Lagos State High Court granted Euracare leave to challenge the jurisdiction of the Coroner’s Court, halting the proceedings pending a judicial review. The Coroner’s Court has since adjourned the matter to October 8, 2026.

This legal maneuvering has faced stiff resistance from state actors. Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), alongside the Chief Coroner, have filed a preliminary objection urging the High Court to throw out Euracare’s application, branding it as premature, incompetent, and an abuse of court processes.

Regulatory Sanctions

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) disciplinary panel has already taken disciplinary action, suspending Euracare’s Medical Director, Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, and the anaesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, alongside the Chief Medical Officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, pending the final determination of professional misconduct proceedings.

While Euracare has previously maintained that its clinical team followed internationally accepted protocols for a critically ill patient, the hospital management has not issued a fresh response to Adichie’s latest public disclosures.
