NEW YORK — Legal representation for embattled music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has filed blistering new court documents seeking to limit discovery in the high-profile $30 million civil lawsuit brought against him by former music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones.
According to filings obtained by media outlets, Combs’ defense team argues that the music mogul should not be forced to produce extensive documentation or sit for grueling depositions, labeling Jones’ current discovery requests as “abusive” and “improper.”
The Missing Medical Records Controversy
Central to the defense’s latest motion is the claim that Jones has failed to provide compliant access to his own medical records. Combs’ attorneys assert that a mutual agreement was reached late last year for Jones to sign a standard medical release. However, the defense alleges that the paperwork eventually submitted by the producer failed to meet federal privacy regulations governing sensitive health histories.
Combs’ legal team contends that because the lawsuit hinges on severe physical and emotional distress allegations, reviewing the plaintiff’s medical background is critical—and that the current non-compliance should stall further discovery mandates.
Rejecting Cuba Gooding Jr. Inquiries
The new filings also push back sharply on attempts by Jones’ legal team to interrogate Combs regarding third-party individuals, specifically Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.
Jones, who amended his initial complaint to name Gooding as a co-defendant, alleges that the actor inappropriately fondled and groped him during a gathering aboard Combs’ chartered yacht. Combs’ attorneys have vigorously dismissed this line of questioning, stating in the filings that demanding information or statements concerning the alleged actions of outside parties is legally improper and irrelevant to the core claims against their client.
A Divisive $30 Million Battle
Jones originally filed the explosive 73-page civil suit accusing Combs of a pattern of sexual assault, grooming, forced drug use, and psychological abuse while working together on The Love Album: Off the Grid between 2022 and 2023. Among the most severe claims are allegations that Jones was drugged and assaulted at Combs’ residences.
Combs has vehemently denied all allegations from the outset. His legal representatives have repeatedly characterized the lawsuit as an unsubstantiated “money grab” intended to manufacture media headlines.
”Lil Rod is nothing more than a liar who filed a $30 million lawsuit shamelessly looking for an undeserved payday,” Combs’ attorney previously stated. “His reckless name-dropping about events that are pure fiction and simply did not happen is nothing more than a transparent attempt to garner headlines.”
While a federal judge previously pared down the scope of the civil lawsuit—dismissing several heavy-handed structural charges including racketeering (RICO) claims—the core allegations of sexual assault continue to move through the discovery phase amid intense legal maneuvering.
