Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, used his appearance at the official 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert on Wednesday to draw global attention to the plight of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a powerful show of solidarity, the singer appeared on stage wearing a customised black leather jacket adorned with green circular buttons bearing the names of the kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers. The names of those still in captivity were inscribed in white, while those of victims who lost their lives during the ordeal were highlighted in red.
The jacket also carried the inscription, “BRING THEM HOME,” boldly printed across the back, while Davido paired the outfit with a white T-shirt emblazoned with “NIGERIA.”
A backstage video of the singer’s outfit quickly went viral, with many praising him for using a global platform to spotlight Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
Speaking moments before taking the stage, Davido expressed sympathy for the affected families and called on authorities to intensify efforts to secure the victims’ release.
“Peace and love everywhere. May God be with the families of the abducted and the ones who have been killed,” Davido said.
“They still haven’t been rescued, we’re praying to God every day. We’re also praying to God that the government hastens, and you know… My country is going through a lot. We represent everywhere we go.”
The countdown concert marked a significant milestone ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and attracted global attention from football fans and music lovers alike.
