AWKA— In a decisive move to bolster administrative efficiency and academic excellence, the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has announced the appointment of a new University Librarian and six strategic directors.
The decision was ratified during the Council’s 21st Emergency Meeting held on Friday, marking a significant transition in the institution’s leadership hierarchy. University officials described the selection process as a rigorous and merit-driven exercise designed to position the institution for global competitiveness.
The New Leadership Tier
The Governing Council, led by the Pro-Chancellor, Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi, approved the following appointments:
- University Librarian: Prof. Eze Jacintha Ukamaka
- Director of Medical Services: Dr. Jane Ezeonu
- Director of Works Services: Ibe Obinna
- Director of Procurement: Akuma Paschal
- Director of Physical Planning: Ezeokafor Lawrence
- Chief Safety Officer: Obi Collins
- Director of Information and Public Relations: Aloysius Emeka Attah
The appointments, which took effect on April 17, 2026, carry a single five-year tenure. The inclusion of Aloysius Attah, a veteran journalist and former correspondent for The Sun Newspaper, as the university’s spokesperson, is seen by analysts as a strategic move to enhance the institution’s public image and communication strategy.
Emphasis on Integrity and Merit
While presenting the appointment letters at the Council Chambers, Pro-Chancellor Kukoyi charged the new officials to view their roles as a call to service rather than a privilege. He emphasized that the university would maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward professional negligence.
”Diligence, accountability, and professionalism are non-negotiable,” Kukoyi stated. “We expect these appointees to serve as ambassadors who will project UNIZIK positively on both national and international stages.”
The Pro-Chancellor also extended gratitude to the Visitor of the University, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for their ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s tertiary education sector through improved funding and policy frameworks.
A New Chapter for UNIZIK
Responding on behalf of the new appointees, Aloysius Attah praised the Governing Council and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, for maintaining a transparent process that resisted sectional or ethnic biases.
”This exercise reflects a deliberate attempt to strengthen institutional governance,” Attah noted, promising that the team would surpass expectations in advancing the university’s mission.
The appointments come at a critical time for the institution as it seeks to navigate the complexities of modern higher education, including infrastructure management, research innovation, and heightened security protocols. The letters of appointment were officially signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke.
