The Federal Government has moved to crush a growing wave of “misinformation” following a high-stakes migration agreement signed between President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the United Kingdom.
While rumors swirled that Nigeria was becoming a dumping ground for illegal migrants from across Africa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Temitope Ajayi, has issued a stinging clarification: Nigeria is taking back its own, and only its own.
The “UK Letter” Revolution
The deal, inked by Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, is designed to shatter the administrative bottlenecks that once protected illegal residents. In a historic shift, Nigeria will now recognize “UK Letters”—special travel documents issued by British authorities—to fast-track the removal of Nigerians who have overstayed their welcomes or seen their asylum claims hit a dead end.
No “Third-Party” Dumping
”The Nigerian government is not taking back non-Nigerians,” Ajayi declared, addressing critics who feared the UK was “compelling” Nigeria to accept foreign nationals. The agreement is a surgical strike aimed specifically at:
- Visa Overstayers: Individuals whose legal right to remain has expired.
- Failed Asylum Seekers: Those whose refuge claims were rejected by British courts.
- Criminal Offenders: Nigerians convicted of crimes on British soil.
Dignity or Departure?
Despite the “iron fist” approach to enforcement, the Ministry of Interior insists the process is wrapped in a “velvet glove” of human rights. The new framework promises “dignified return and reintegration,” featuring:
- Strict Identity Checks: To ensure no “identity theft” occurs during the deportation process.
- Trafficking Safeguards: Protection for vulnerable citizens coerced into illegal migration.
- The Right to Return: A “bridge” for the future, allowing returnees to re-apply for UK visas if they meet legal requirements down the line.
The message from the Presidency is clear: The “Japa” dream must be pursued through legal channels, or the journey home will be swifter than ever before.
