2027: It’ll Be Difficult For Tinubu To Be Defeated In Abuja – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that unseating President Bola Tinubu in Abuja in the 2027 general election will be a daunting task for any opposition candidate.

He cited ongoing infrastructure transformation across the nation’s capital.

Wike made the assertion while addressing journalists after an inspection tour of key projects in satellite towns within the FCT.

During the event, he highlighted the “deliberate shift” from city-centric development to inclusive expansion across previously neglected communities.

According to the minister, the scale and spread of ongoing projects have begun to redefine daily living for residents, improving access, mobility and economic prospects in ways that are already resonating with the people.

“It is very difficult for anybody to win an election in the FCT against Mr President,” Wike said.

He expressed confidence that the impact of the administration’s interventions would translate into electoral support.

His comments come against the backdrop of the 2023 presidential election outcome in the FCT, where Peter Obi of the Labour Party secured a decisive victory over both Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Obi polled 281,717 votes to defeat Tinubu, who garnered 90,902 votes, while Abubakar came third with 74,199 votes.

The result was widely interpreted at the time as a reflection of urban voter sentiment in the capital.

However, Wike suggested that the political dynamics in the FCT are evolving, anchored on “tangible improvements in infrastructure and governance delivery” under the current administration.

He explained that President Tinubu had given clear directives against the over concentration of development in Abuja’s city centre, insisting that satellite communities must equally feel the impact of governance.

“We were clearly told that there shouldn’t be an over concentration of development in the city. We must go to the satellite towns. These communities are part of Abuja, and their lives must also change,” he said.

From road expansions to improved connectivity corridors, Wike noted that areas such as Karu, Apo Kashi and the Bwari Kubwa axis are witnessing unprecedented construction activities, opening up communities that had long struggled with poor access and limited infrastructure.

He further pointed to the growing ease of movement between satellite towns and the city centre as a critical marker of progress.

He noted that residents can now commute from places like Kuje to central Abuja within a significantly reduced timeframe.
