The Ogun State media landscape is in mourning following the death of Akeem Akintunde, a towering figure in Nigerian broadcasting and sports journalism. Akintunde, the former Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), passed away on the night of Wednesday, February 11, 2026, following a prolonged illness.
A Legacy of Excellence
Known affectionately by colleagues as a “repository of knowledge,” Akintunde’s career spanned several decades, during which he became a cornerstone of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). He previously served as the Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of SWAN, where he was instrumental in elevating the standard of sports reporting in the region.
In a statement released shortly after his passing, the Secretary of the Ogun State NUJ Council, Bunmi Adigun, described the veteran’s death as the “end of an era.”
”His passage tonight… marks the end of a remarkable career defined by dedication, excellence, and an unwavering passion for journalism and sports,” Adigun stated.
Impact at OGTV
During his tenure as Director of Programmes at OGTV, Akintunde was credited with modernizing the station’s content delivery and mentoring a new generation of broadcasters. His leadership style was characterized by a deep commitment to “authentic community-driven content,” a value that resonated throughout his professional life.

Since the news broke, tributes have flooded in from across the state. Colleagues recall a man who “lived and breathed journalism,” maintaining his sharp wit and professional interest in current affairs even during his final days.
The Ogun State journalism community has extended its deepest condolences to the Akintunde family. While burial arrangements are yet to be announced, the NUJ has called for prayers and solidarity for the bereaved family during this “irreparable loss.”
His passing comes at a poignant time as the state prepares for its Ogun@50 celebrations, an event he undoubtedly would have covered with his signature depth and expertise.
