Air Force Officer Stabbed,After Disrupting Street Football

Residents of Oremeji in the Shasha area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, were gripped by fear following a violent clash on Sunday, November 9, involving a Nigerian Air Force officer and local youths playing street football.

According to eyewitness accounts, the officer, who was not in uniform at the time, became involved after a football accidentally struck him. A resident, Baba, said the officer tried to seize the ball and assaulted the boy who kicked it. When bystanders intervened, tensions escalated as the officer pulled out a knife, stabbed the ball, and threatened anyone who approached. In the chaos, some boys sustained injuries while trying to hold him back. One of the youths eventually wrestled the knife from him and stabbed the officer.

The injured officer was rushed to the hospital and is confirmed to be alive, contrary to initial rumors of his death. Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi stated that while the matter was not officially reported, the officer received medical treatment and police intervened to restore peace.

Following the incident, personnel from the nearby Air Force base reportedly conducted reprisal searches in the area, leading to tensions and fear among residents. Some community members said the military personnel engaged in aggressive behavior, even using tear gas during a subsequent operation. Shop owners in the vicinity now close earlier, wary of further disturbances.

Police have denied claims of ongoing harassment by Air Force officers, noting that community leaders and security officials have worked together to ensure calm. The Air Force commandant was involved in dialogue with local stakeholders to ease tensions.

This episode is reminiscent of earlier violent confrontations in the area between civilians and military personnel, reflecting underlying challenges in civil-military relations in Lagos.
