Since arriving in Nigeria in 1963 as a young British graduate, Professor David Jowitt has dedicated over six decades to teaching and advancing English language studies across Nigeria. Beginning his career at the Anglican Grammar School Ubulu-Ukwu in the then Mid-West Region, now Delta State, Prof. Jowitt found himself embraced by the warmth and friendliness of Nigerians, a deep connection that kept him committed to the country through the years.
At just 22, he took on the challenge of teaching in a school without running water or electricity, where students initially resisted English lessons. Yet, he thrived, drawn by the joy of sharing knowledge and immersing himself in diverse Nigerian cultures and languages such as Igbo, Ebira, and Hausa. His career spanned from secondary schools like Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha, through colleges of education in Okene and Pankshin, to prestigious universities including Bayero University Kano and the University of Jos.
Prof. Jowitt’s love for Nigeria’s community-centered way of life, rich humor, and vibrant cultural diversity contrasted sharply with the individualism of his native Britain. Throughout his journey, he authored numerous influential books on Nigerian English, helping Nigerians appreciate the unique evolution of English language usage in their country.
Despite the challenges, including security concerns and the strain of adjusting titles and cultural nuances, he remained steadfast. His affection for Nigerian cuisine like pounded yam, amala, and Edikang Ikong illustrated his integration into Nigerian life.
Though he never married, citing time spent building his career and literary legacy, his lasting friendships with Nigerian academics and former students underscore his profound impact. One former student, a SAN and another a Delta State House of Assembly speaker, attest to his enduring influence.
Today, as Anglican Grammar School Ubulu-Ukwu grapples with dilapidation, alumni associations strive to restore the school to its former glory, acknowledging its role in shaping leaders like Prof. Jowitt.
In reflection, Prof. Jowitt sees Nigeria not just as a place of work but a home filled with community spirit and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to education and language scholarship.
