Born on November 24, 1936, in the Italian-American neighborhood of Federal Hill in Providence, Caprio was the second of three sons to Antonio Caprio, an immigrant fruit vendor, and Filomena Caprio, a homemaker. Raised with strong values, he worked as a dishwasher and shoe-shiner during his youth while attending public schools. He graduated from Central High School, where he was a state wrestling champion, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1958. While teaching American government at Hope High School, he attended Suffolk University School of Law at night, which launched his legal career.

Caprio served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard from 1954 to 1962 before being appointed in 1985 as a judge on the Providence Municipal Court. He served nearly 40 years on the bench and became chief judge until his retirement in early 2023.
