In what local observers have described as a resounding vote of confidence for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mrs. Adesola Ayoola Elegbeji has emerged victorious in the Remo Federal Constituency by-election held Saturday, August 16, 2025. The win coincides with Ogun State’s historic achievement of securing commercial operational approval for its newly built Gateway International Airport.
Announcing the results at the Ikenne collation centre in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Prof. Kazeem Olajide Bello, confirmed Elegbeji polled an impressive 41,237 votes, trouncing her main opponent, Bolarinwa Oluwole of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 14,324 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate earned 289 votes.
Breakdown by local government areas shows APC’s grip on the region:
●Ikenne LGA: APC – 10,227, PDP – 5,595
●Remo North LGA: APC – 8,052, PDP – 992
●SagamuLGA: APC – 22,958, PDP – 7,737
The by-election followed the passing of the previous representative, Adewunmi Onanuga, earlier this year.
Governor Dapo Abiodun attributed the APC victory to his administration’s ambitious agenda to uplift Ogun State through far-reaching infrastructural development and people-focused policies. At a press conference in Iperu, Abiodun described the election outcome as a “referendum on exceptional governance,” asserting the result validates Ogun’s rapid transformation and the broader success of President Bola Tinubu’s reforms over the past 24 months.
“Our administration has been deliberate and intentional in our quest to improve the lives of people and transform our towns and cities through aggressive and massive infrastructural development across the state… This victory also coincides with the NCAA’s approval for the Gateway International Airport to commence commercial operations—a monumental achievement,” Abiodun said.
The newly certified Gateway International Airport, now equipped for daytime passenger flights and designated as a strategic alternative landing site to Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport, is set to connect Ogun to global trade routes, with plans for direct routes to Abuja, Port Harcourt, and even cargo flights to London.
Mrs. Elegbeji, bringing decades of expertise in community advocacy and transformation, pledged to make women’s empowerment, youth development, and grassroots integration her legislative priorities. She assured constituents her tenure will be marked by vigilance in service, impact-driven projects, and an unwavering commitment to continuing the work of the late Onanuga.
“Women and youth development, rural integration, and constituency empowerment will shape my work for Remo. I am deeply grateful for your trust and promise not to disappoint,” Mrs. Elegbeji stated after receiving her certificate of return.
Governor Abiodun urged party supporters to remain united and disciplined, underscoring the “victory is not an end in itself,” but a charge to sustain the momentum of the state’s renewed hope agenda. With record voter turnout and a peaceful electoral process, Ogun State has demonstrated its appetite for progress and stability, setting the stage for decisive political contests in 2027.
Key Achievements Cited in Governor Abiodun’s Address:
●Massive infrastructural expansion across Ogun State
●Approval and operational launch of Gateway International Airport
●Aggressive human capital development without regional bias
●Enhanced reputation for security and transparency in elections
