Makinde Immortalises Late Rep Olaide Akinremi with Newly Named Samonda Housing Estate

In a move that bridges political divides and honours selfless public service, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially unveiled the Prince Olaide Akinremi Jagaban Government Reserved Area (GRA), a newly named housing estate that stands as a lasting tribute to the late All Progressives Congress lawmaker who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency.

The unveiling ceremony, held on Thursday along Dominion University Road in Samonda, Ibadan, saw Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal representing Governor Makinde, who emphasised the significance of immortalising Prince Akinremi for his “outstanding contributions to his constituency and the state”. Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, party leaders, and family members, Lawal reflected on the governor’s reaction to the lawmaker’s death in July 2024, noting, “Ibadanland lost a gem,” and revealing how the idea to honour him was conceived immediately after the news broke.

Governor Makinde assured that the Prince Olaide Akinremi Jagaban GRA would not be a mere symbolic gesture but a high-standard estate with all critical infrastructure and facilities already on ground. He further announced that the reconstruction of the UI-Samonda Road, which connects the estate to major routes including Sango and Poly Road, is nearing completion—part of the administration’s ongoing infrastructure push.

Local government leaders and community figures echoed the importance of the gesture. Chairman of Ibadan North LG, Oluseun Olufade, lauded Makinde for prioritising public service over political lines, urging peers to emulate such “inclusive governance”. High Chief Akinade Fijabi, serving as chairman for the day, hailed the governor’s infrastructural achievements and commitment to bipartisan honour.

On behalf of the Akinremi family, Abideen Akinremi expressed heartfelt gratitude for the state government’s support and pledged that the legacy of service and purpose would endure, not only within the family but across Ibadan North.

Governor Makinde reaffirmed that immortalisation is best achieved by “creating something enduring” rather than monetary gifts—a sentiment broadly welcomed at the ceremony. As work continues on roads and facilities, the new estate is set to become a symbol of exemplary public service and a reminder of the enduring impact of purposeful leadership.
