According to reports, a speeding Toyota Corolla collided with a cab from behind in the Ile-Ise Panu axis at the Abeokuta end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, causing three deaths and eight injuries.
Both vehicles were traveling to Abeokuta when the collision happened around 7.30 am on Friday, according to our correspondent.
The Toyota Corolla with license plate LND618FQ was damaged in the engine compartment by the collision, while the Nissan Micra taxi with with plate AKM590YQ was severely damaged.
The event was confirmed by Babatunde Akinbiyi, Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency.
Akinbiyi said that according to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Toyota Corolla lost control of the vehicle as a result of speeding and smashed it into the cab from behind as passengers attempted to exit.
Four men and seven women made up the 11 people in the two vehicles at the time of the event, he continued.
He said, “According to an eyewitness account, both vehicles were inbound Abeokuta when the driver of the blue Corolla car, due to excessive speed, lost control while on motion and rammed into the Micra taxi from the back, while passengers in the taxi were alighting from it. As at the time of the crash, five passengers were in the taxi while six were in the Corolla.”
According to Akinbiyi, the injured were transferred to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the dead were deposited at the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta.
He said that while TRACE and the police commiserate with the family of the dead, warning motorists to avoid speeding.
