The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike to address concerns regarding the union’s affairs.
The decision was announced on Thursday following a congress held at the institution’s Permanent Site.
UniAbuja ASUU members have been in disagreement with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, particularly regarding the procedures for appointing a new VC.
A national daily published an advert on March 15, 2024, seeking Na’Allah’s replacement.

However, ASUU members rejected the advertisement during a conference, labeling it “illegal” and asserting that it lacked approval from the governing council.
According to Sylvanus Ugoh, the Chairman of UniAbuja ASUU, the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended (2003 and 2012), specifically Section 3, subsections 1 and 2, grants sole authority to the governing council to advertise the VC position when vacant.
He emphasized that no other entity or individual has the legal mandate to initiate the process of appointing a new VC.
The strike decision reflects ASUU’s stance on the matter, with further details expected to emerge.
