​4 Policemen Nabbed Over ₦53,000 Extortion of ICPC Boss

​ABUJA — Four police officers attached to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command are currently facing severe disciplinary measures and imminent dismissal after running afoul of the law in the most dramatic fashion. The operatives reportedly extorted ₦53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), at an unauthorized checkpoint in the nation’s capital.

​The incident unfolded when the officers, operating outside the bounds of professional conduct, flagged down the ICPC Chairman’s vehicle under the guise of routine security checks. Unaware of his identity or high-ranking status, the operatives leveled sundry, trumped-up allegations against him to intimidate and coerce him into parting with cash.

​Determined to squeeze their target, the rogue officers rejected digital bank transfers, insisting instead on physical cash. They escorted Dr. Aliyu to a nearby Point of Sale (PoS) operator, where he was compelled to make a physical withdrawal of ₦53,000, covering the attendant transaction charges in the process. Once the funds were secured, the syndicate split the loot and allowed the ICPC chief to drive away.

​However, the architects of the extortion scheme miscalculated the consequences of their actions. Immediately departing the scene, Dr. Aliyu formally reported the breach to security authorities, prompting the immediate deployment of a high-powered tactical squad by the FCT Police Command to hunt down the perpetrators.

​Addressing journalists during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, July 20, 2026, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, confirmed the swift apprehension of the errant officers.

​”We declared them wanted, arrested their leader, and during interrogation he confessed and identified the others. We tracked down and arrested the remaining members of the gang,” CP Sanusi stated.

​Detailing the mechanics of the crime, the police commissioner reiterated that the suspects subjected the anti-corruption tsar to humiliation by dragging him to a PoS vendor before pocketing the proceeds.

​Addressing public concern regarding accountability within the force, CP Sanusi maintained a zero-tolerance stance, assuring that justice would be served without reservation.

​”We got all of them. We are going to make sure they are severely punished. Those that are going to be dismissed will definitely be dismissed,” he affirmed.

​The development has reignited public discourse surrounding the menace of illegal checkpoints, police extortion, and the urgent necessity for heightened internal monitoring across security formations in the Federal Capital Territory.
