2027: Obesere’s wife joins race for Oyo Reps seat

Wife of popular fuji musician, Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, Alhaja Sekinat Tolanikawo Akande, has officially declared her intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency.

Speaking during her declaration on Tuesday at St. Cyprian’s Primary School, Oluyoro, Oke-Oga, Ibadan, Akande confirmed that she will be running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akande, who is also known as Eruobodo 1, said she is committed to delivering effective representation and improving the welfare of constituents if elected.

She further promised to bring hope, ensure good representation, and promote gender balance.

She said, “I am here today to declare my intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency. This decision was made out of my love for my people, because I love to speak on behalf of people and I am a people-oriented person.

“If elected, I promise the people of Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency good representation, gender balance, and I will be the voice of the people.”

Speaking, the Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Dr Adekemi Opatunde, urged party members to shun gender discrimination and give women more opportunities to participate actively in politics.

Opatunde stressed the need for inclusiveness, noting that women have the capacity to contribute meaningfully to governance and party development.

She urged party stakeholders to create a level playing field for female aspirants, adding that fairness and equity would strengthen the party’s chances in future elections.

“I am so delighted about today’s significant development because we have long been marginalised, and this underscores one of the reasons why we have not been enjoying the dividends of democracy. I know that women have a pivotal role in governance, so what is happening here is encouraging and good for our democracy.

“Politics should not be seen as a male-dominated space. Women have proven over time that they can lead, mobilise, and deliver results.

“I appeal to our leaders and members to support women who show interest in contesting positions. When women are given the chance, they will not disappoint,” Opatunde stated.
