2027 Campaign Begins: Tinubu, Obi, Sowore Sign Peace Accord

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential contest formally entered a new phase on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as political parties and presidential candidates began their campaigns and major contenders signed a National Peace Accord in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party presidential hopeful Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore and other political actors were among those associated with the accord ahead of the general election.

The development matters because Nigeria’s campaign season has historically been accompanied by inflammatory rhetoric, intimidation, violence and disputes over electoral processes.

The signing therefore represents more than a ceremonial photograph. It places the major contenders under a public commitment to pursue the contest peacefully.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission fixed August 19, 2026, as the commencement date for campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The race now moves from preparation to persuasion

For Tinubu, the election will be a referendum of sorts on his administration’s record since taking office in May 2023. The President’s economic programme has produced some improvements in macroeconomic stability, but the adjustment has also imposed considerable pressure on households.

Nigeria’s economy expanded by 3.89 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, according to figures reported from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Yet the improvement in headline economic indicators has not automatically translated into stronger household incomes.

That tension will dominate the campaign.

The opposition will argue that economic reform cannot be judged only by exchange rates, foreign reserves or GDP figures.

The governing party will point to reforms intended to correct structural weaknesses that had accumulated for years. The electorate will ultimately decide which argument carries greater weight.

INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan has separately assured political parties that the commission will not favour any candidate or political party.

That assurance will face its first serious test as campaign spending, rallies, political advertising and grassroots mobilisation intensify.

What Nigerians should watch

The most important issue now is not simply who wins the loudest campaign. It is whether political parties can campaign without turning Nigeria’s existing social and economic tensions into instruments of mobilisation.

The peace accord creates a standard against which political behaviour can now be judged. The real test begins after the signatures leave the paper.
