OVER 500 ADC MEMBERS JOIN PDP
More than 500 members of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The defectors were led by Jagunmolu Matthew Olowo and Hon. Nurudeen Taiwo, identified as the ADC Ward 2 chairman in Abeokuta North.
They were received into the PDP structure as political parties intensify their preparations and grassroots organisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development is particularly notable because one of the people leading the movement was a ward-level official of the ADC.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the movement therefore involves not only individual members but also a political organiser who had held a position within another party’s ward structure.
FROM ADC WARD STRUCTURE TO PDP
The defection took place in Abeokuta North, an area that forms part of Ogun Central’s wider political landscape.
The PDP has been strengthening its presence across wards and communities in the area as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
The latest movement adds another group of members to that structure.
The defectors were received by the PDP leadership in Abeokuta North, with local government party chairman Oshunrinde Olugbenga assuring the new members that they would be integrated into the existing structure.
Oshunrinde also said responsibilities within the party would be assigned on the basis of merit rather than simply on the basis of political seniority. That issue becomes important whenever political parties absorb large numbers of new members.
Existing members already occupy ward and local government positions, while defectors may arrive with their own political networks and expectations.
WHY THE WARD LEVEL MATTERS
The movement comes at a time when the PDP’s 2027 campaign organisation in Ogun Central is increasingly visible.
The party formally began its 2027 presidential and National Assembly campaign activities in Ogun Central in August, with its campaign train moving through Ifo/Ewekoro, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South federal constituencies.
The exercise featured PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu and Ogun Central senatorial candidate Iyabo Obasanjo, alongside other party candidates and officials.
Abeokuta North is therefore one of the constituencies in which the party is already organising at campaign and ward levels.
The latest defection adds another development to that process.
IYABO OBASANJO AND ADEBUTU IN THE GRASSROOTS EQUATION
The political activities of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo and Ladi Adebutu have been prominent in the PDP’s Ogun Central mobilisation.
Obasanjo is the party’s candidate for the Ogun Central senatorial contest, while Adebutu is the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ogun State.
Their campaigns involve different electoral positions, but both operate within the wider PDP structure being built across Ogun State.
The Abeokuta North defection consequently forms part of a broader process in which parties are seeking to organise supporters, ward structures, candidates and local political networks before the 2027 elections.
It does not, by itself, establish how those members will vote or whether they will remain with the party through the election.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE DEFECTION?
The immediate political ceremony is only the beginning. The new members now have to be incorporated into the PDP’s existing ward and local government structures.
That means determining their roles, connecting them with existing party officials and maintaining their participation beyond the defection event.
For the PDP, the practical question is therefore not simply how many people crossed over on the day. It is whether the new entrants become active members of the party’s ward organisation and participate consistently in its political activities.
For the defectors, the transition also involves adapting to a new party structure after leaving the ADC.

Pre-election defections are a recurring feature of Nigerian politics. Politicians and supporters move between parties for different reasons, including political calculations, local relationships, disagreements within their former parties and decisions about the platform on which they intend to participate in an election.
The receiving party generally presents such movements as an expansion of its organisation, while the defectors explain their decisions from their own political perspectives.
The significance of a defection can therefore only become clearer with time.
Membership figures announced at political events also require distinction between the number claimed by organisers and the number that can be independently verified through formal membership records.
In this case, the reported figure is more than 500 ADC members.
THE 2027 GRASSROOTS CONTEST
The development adds another layer to the political activity already taking place in Ogun State ahead of 2027.
Across Abeokuta North and other constituencies, parties are building ward structures, identifying local organisers, engaging community stakeholders and preparing candidates for the electoral cycle.
The movement of the ADC members into the PDP is part of that unfolding process.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the long-term significance of the Abeokuta North defection will depend on whether the new members are successfully integrated into the PDP structure and remain active as the 2027 electoral process progresses.
For now, the development provides a fresh example of how Nigeria’s pre-election politics is being shaped not only by major rallies and prominent candidates, but also by movement and organisation at ward level.
