The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has presented additional proof of evidence against former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, during a court hearing on Friday.
Emefiele’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo, requested an adjournment to review the new evidence before continuing the cross-examination of the second prosecution witness, John Ikechukwu Ayoh.
Ojo accused the EFCC of engaging in “trial by ambush” and lacking diligence in their prosecution, stating that they had just received the additional evidence from the EFCC.

Similarly, the counsel to the second defendant, Adeyinka Kotoye, expressed receiving the additional proof of evidence five minutes after arriving in court.
In response, EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo argued that the documents provided were from a former aide to Emefiele in preparation for his testimony, which did not affect the ongoing cross-examination.
Oyedepo emphasized that the documents were obtained from the phone of Emefiele’s former aide, John Adetona, who was not scheduled to appear in court on the present or upcoming hearing.
Presiding judge Rahman Oshodi agreed with the defendant’s counsel, ruling in favor of an adjournment to May 9 to allow time for reviewing the new evidence.
Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are currently being tried in a Lagos high court on a 26-count charge, with both pleading not guilty to all charges.
