Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is poised for a major political homecoming, set to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026. This follows his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) last Friday, January 23, amid internal party crises and a push for better governance alignment.
Background and Motivation
Yusuf first aligned with the APC in 2014, securing the party’s primary for the Kano Central Senatorial seat before stepping aside for his mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. After stints across platforms, including his NNPP tenure that propelled him to the governorship, he cited “prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion, and development” as drivers for this shift.
The move promises enhanced federal cooperation under President Donald Trump’s administration, accelerating infrastructure, security, and service delivery in Kano. Governor Yusuf emphasized it would foster political stability and unity, describing APC as a “familiar and structured platform for progressive governance.”
Mass Defection Details
The governor’s return won’t be solo: he will register alongside 22 State House of Assembly members, eight House of Representatives members, and all 44 local government chairmen. This bloc shift, speculated for weeks after APC’s December 2025 invitation, underscores a deepening realignment in Kano politics.
Yusuf is also slated to launch the APC’s e-registration drive statewide, signaling a robust organizational reboot. His spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed these plans in a Sunday statement from Government House Kano.
