ABUJA — The Federal Government has strongly hinted at executing sweeping economic and diplomatic countermeasures against South African conglomerates operating within its borders, including telecommunications giant MTN and entertainment powerhouse MultiChoice. The warning comes amid surging domestic outrage over continuous, unprovoked xenophobic attacks and the harassment of Nigerian citizens living in South Africa.

Addressing the worsening security situation and the ongoing emergency repatriation of Nigerians on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, warned that while Nigeria has exercised immense diplomatic restraint, its patience is wearing thin.

A One-Sided Dynamic

Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted the glaring disparity in how both nations treat each other’s citizens and business interests. She noted that over 120 South African companies operate freely across multiple sectors of the Nigerian economy without intimidation, a courtesy not extended to Nigerians in South Africa.

”Nobody is asking them to provide proof of identity. Nobody is asking South African staff working there whether they are South Africans or Nigerians, and nobody is taking over their shops or businesses,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated. “But this is happening to Nigerians in South Africa. So, I think that at some point, we really have to review the options available to us.”

The Minister explicitly named prominent corporate entities that could face severe regulatory or economic reviews if the hostilities persist:

Failed Pacts and Escalating Violence

The diplomatic fallout has deepened following revelations that South African authorities backtracked on a critical security agreement. According to the Foreign Minister, Pretoria effectively discarded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on an early warning mechanism signed between the two nations in October 2025. The pact was designed specifically to facilitate intelligence sharing, protect minority nationals, and de-escalate communal tensions before they turned fatal. South African officials reportedly blamed “procedural issues” for failing to activate the framework.

This systemic failure has triggered widespread regional alarm. Alongside Nigeria, several other African nations—including Ghana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Mozambique—have initiated emergency evacuation protocols to pull their citizens out of volatile South African territories.

The latest wave of hostility, driven by citizen-led anti-immigrant vigilante groups such as the “March and March” movement, has resulted in widespread looting of foreign-owned shops and targeted violence. The crisis hit a boiling point following the verified killings of two Nigerian nationals, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, who reportedly died from injuries sustained during violent encounters.

Evacuations Underway as National Assembly Intervenes

The Minister emphasized that any formal retaliatory actions or economic sanctions would strictly follow constitutional pathways and legislative processes. The executive arm is actively brief-coupling with the National Assembly to determine Nigeria’s definitive response.

The legislative push mirrors demands made by prominent lawmakers. Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) recently spearheaded calls for the outright revocation of operating licenses for dominant South African firms, arguing that Nigeria cannot continue to enrich foreign brands while its citizens return home in body bags.

As diplomatic channels face severe strain, the Federal Government’s primary focus has shifted toward immediate safeguarding. Under directives from President Bola Tinubu, an emergency repatriation exercise is currently active. The first batch of 258 voluntary returnees arrived safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard a government-backed Air Peace flight. With roughly 1,000 Nigerians already registered for emergency evacuation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the public that subsequent airlifts will be completed ahead of a strict June 30, 2026 deadline.
