Among those present to honor the Pope is former Nigerian presidential aspirant and ex-governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi. He joined Cardinal Francis Arinze and other international figures at St. Peter’s Basilica, participating in the public rites.
The presence of Cardinal Arinze underscores the significance of the event, with the respected cleric playing a key role in the proceedings. It is also important to note the presence of other Nigerian Catholic Cardinals, and that Cardinal Peter Okpaleke, an elector cardinal, will participate in the conclave to elect the next Pope.
The funeral proceedings have drawn world leaders from across the globe, highlighting the widespread influence and respect commanded by Pope Francis. The Vatican has organized for the body of the late Pope to lay in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects.
The planned burial at the Basilica of St. Mary Major reflects the late Pope’s desire for a simpler funeral, a testament to his humility. As the world mourns, the Vatican prepares for the transition, with the upcoming conclave to elect a new leader for the Catholic Church.
