Women take centre stage as Five females emerged lawmakers-elect in Kwara state Assembly

It is a new dawn in the political landscape in the North Central State of Kwara as five women have been elected into the State House of Assembly.

The women, who got elected on Saturday, are Rukayat Shittu for Owode/Onire Constituency; Arinola Lawal for Ilorin East State Constituency; Medinat AbdulRaheem for Lanwa/ Ejidongari Constituency; Aishat Babatunde-Alanamu for Ilorin North-West Constituency and Mariam Aladi for Ilorin South Constituency.

Of particular interest is Rukayat Shittu who is the youngest elected lawmaker in the 10th legislative session across the country.

The 26 year old mass communication graduate is a former Senate President of Congress of NOUN Students (CONS)

In the 8th assembly, 4 women (S.R Abdulkadir, Ebun Owolabi, Aisha Ibrahim, and Sikirat Anako) were elected into the Kwara state house of assembly.

However in the current Kwara State Assembly, all the 24 seats are being occupied by male lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress won 23 out of the 24 seats, while the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party secured one seat.
