The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a woman seen in a viral video holding a knife and verbally attacking police officers following her alleged arrest over the sale of cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp.
The command disclosed the arrest on Friday while responding to the video, which circulated widely on social media.
In the footage, the woman is seen holding what appears to be a knife while cursing and confronting police officers. According to the police, the incident followed the woman’s alleged arrest in connection with the sale of cannabis.
The command said its operatives had taken her into custody following the incident. The police did not, however, establish through the statement whether the woman had already been formally charged or whether the substance allegedly linked to her had been subjected to laboratory confirmation.
The cannabis allegation should therefore be treated as an allegation pending investigation and any subsequent prosecution.
The incident has attracted attention because of the woman’s conduct towards the officers in the viral footage and the apparent escalation of the confrontation.
Police authorities are expected to investigate both the circumstances surrounding the alleged cannabis offence and the events captured in the video.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the woman’s arrest does not amount to a conviction for cannabis-related offences or any alleged assault or threat against the police. The facts surrounding the arrest, the recovered exhibits and the eventual charges will become clearer as the police investigation progresses.
