LAGOS, NIGERIA — In a chilling narrative that highlights the dark intersection of desperation, spiritual manipulation, and marital betrayal, a 31-year-old Nigerian woman has vowed to seek legal justice against her husband after allegedly sacrificing a decade of her sanity for his financial success.

The victim, who entered the marriage at the tender age of 21, revealed that her decade-long nightmare began in 2016. According to her account, her husband introduced her to a white-garment prophet under the guise of seeking spiritual blessings for their household.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

”My husband came home one night and told me that there was a pastor who prayed for him, and requested that he bring his wife,” she recounted. Trusting her spouse, she accompanied him to the shrine-like church, where a cleric clad in a red robe delivered a grim prophecy: the husband was destined for greatness, but it required a heavy price.

The spiritualist initially framed the sacrifice as standard intercessory prayers fitting for a “virtuous woman.” However, by the third day, the true nature of the demand was unveiled. The pastor informed her that for her husband to achieve unparalleled wealth, she would have to undergo seven years of induced mental illness.

Driven by a desire to see her family prosper and believing this “spiritual trial” was a safer alternative to deadly ritualistic practices, she reluctantly agreed.

A Cycle of Betrayal

The agreement, however, was fraught with immediate neglect. While the husband promised to monitor her well-being and provide food during her wandering state, he allegedly abandoned her entirely.

By 2019, a local church discovered her on the streets and initiated her rehabilitation. Upon regaining temporary lucidity, she returned home, only to find her husband terrified by her sudden recovery.

”He was shocked to see me and asked why I was back home,” she said. Because the mandated seven years had not elapsed, her husband reportedly escorted her back to the spiritualist. The cleric declared the first three years “wasted” and reset the spiritual affliction, plunging her back into insanity for another seven years.

Left with Nothing

The woman finally recovered her senses in 2026, marking a total of ten years lost to the streets. Returning to her old neighborhood, she discovered that the spiritualist had died, and his children claimed no knowledge of her affliction.

More devastatingly, her husband had completely vanished from their old residence. With the help of former neighbors, she tracked him down to a new estate, where he now lives in luxury—boasting a new house, expensive cars, and a new wife.

When confronted, the husband denied that her decade of suffering had anything to do with his newfound fortune, dismissing her sacrifices entirely.

”I am 31 now. People are showing me videos of when I was mad on the streets,” she lamented. “I don’t have a phone; I don’t own anything.”

Seeking Justice

Now destitute but fully recovered, the survivor has declared her intention to engage the Nigerian authorities and civil rights organizations to seek legal redress.

”I don’t know if the Nigerian authorities can help me, but I’m going to report him everywhere. I’m going to sue him because he deceived me,” she stated.

Legal experts note that while cases involving spiritual manipulation and alleged witchcraft are notoriously difficult to prosecute under standard Nigerian criminal law, the victim may have strong grounds for civil suits centered on deceit, severe emotional distress, and abandonment. Human rights activists are already calling for a thorough investigation into the husband’s actions to ensure justice is served.
