Carlisle, Cumbria – A 25-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following a shocking incident in Carlisle where two police officers sustained knife injuries. Hannah Smaile, of Lister Court, Carlisle, is also charged with threatening a person with a bladed article in a private place, with reports indicating a hunting knife was involved and an immediate threat to life was posed.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning at approximately 9:30 AM, when Cumbria Constabulary officers responded to a call at an address in the Newtown Road area of Carlisle. During the visit, both officers were allegedly assaulted with a knife.
A female officer suffered a non-life-threatening facial injury, while a male officer sustained a hand injury, described as not life-changing. Both officers received treatment and have since been discharged from the hospital, where they will continue to receive support from the constabulary.
Chief Superintendent Andy Wilkinson stated, “Our officers and staff work incredibly hard to keep people in Cumbria safe. Police officers, like everyone else in society, should be able to go to work without fear of being assaulted.”
Hannah Smaile appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, May 29, 2025, and is scheduled to appear before Carlisle Crown Court for a further hearing on June 30.
