On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, officially commissioned the newly constructed interchange bridges on Wole Soyinka Way over the Northern Expressway (Murtala Mohammed Expressway) in Abuja. The project marks a significant milestone in improving traffic flow and connectivity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The commissioning ceremony was graced by prominent Nigerian leaders, including His Excellency Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, FNSE, FAEng; the Senate President, His Excellency Godswill Akpabio; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, His Excellency Nyesom Wike. The new interchange bridges are expected to ease congestion on one of Abuja’s busiest arterial roads, enhancing commuter experience and supporting economic activities in the capital city.

Background of the Project
The interchange is part of a broader effort by the FCT Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, to transform Abuja’s road network into a modern, efficient system that supports the city’s growth and development. Executed by Gilmor Nig and completed in time for the administration’s second-year anniversary celebrations in May 2025, the project features advanced engineering components including underground surface water drainage, box and pipe culverts, foul sewer and water supply networks, telecommunication ducts, and modern street lighting to ensure durability and functionality.
Strategically located, the interchange connects key districts such as Jahi, Katampe, Katampe Extension, Kado, and Mabushi, while also providing alternative access routes to Kubwa and Suleja, thereby enhancing overall traffic distribution and urban integration.

Expected Impact on Abuja’s Transportation System
The interchange is designed to significantly reduce traffic gridlock on one of Abuja’s busiest arterial roads, improving the flow of vehicles and pedestrian safety. By facilitating smoother movement of people and goods, it is expected to unlock economic opportunities, boost productivity, and stimulate business activities across the FCT.
Furthermore, the project supports urban expansion by improving connectivity between developing districts such as Katampe, Jahi, and Bwari. It aligns with Abuja’s aspiration to become a world-class capital city and reflects the federal government’s commitment to sustainable urban development and enhancing residents’ quality of life.

This infrastructure development is a key pillar of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing infrastructure as the foundation for national competitiveness and social integration. Residents and commuters in Abuja have welcomed the new interchange, anticipating reduced travel times and improved road safety
