Maryam Umar, a 26-year-old woman born without arms, has graduated from Gombe State University after overcoming years of physical and financial challenges with support that included an ASUU scholarship.
Maryam studied Economics and became one of the graduates celebrated after completing her university education despite the difficulties associated with her condition. Her journey is particularly striking because she has reportedly learned to perform everyday tasks, including writing, with her feet.
According to the account shared by the university community, Maryam’s circumstances once placed her in a vulnerable position, including a period when she sought assistance from members of the public.
Her determination to obtain university education, however, eventually attracted institutional support.
ASUU STEPS IN
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, provided Maryam with scholarship support, transportation assistance and a laptop during her studies. The assistance helped reduce some of the financial and practical barriers confronting her as she pursued her degree.
The story also received support from Gombe State University authorities. At a ceremony held to recognise her achievement, Maryam received additional financial assistance, including N50,000 from an individual at the event, while the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, reportedly added N200,000.
BEYOND THE DEGREE
Maryam’s graduation has become more than a personal academic achievement. It has also become a reminder of the difference that targeted support can make when educational institutions look beyond physical limitations and provide students with the tools required to succeed.
Her story does not suggest that disability disappears when a person enters university. Rather, it demonstrates what can happen when determination is matched with opportunity.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Maryam Umar’s graduation offers a powerful lesson in inclusive education: talent does not always arrive in the physical form society expects, and access to education can help transform vulnerability into independence.
Her degree is therefore not merely a certificate. It represents years of persistence, institutional support and the refusal to allow circumstance to dictate the boundaries of her future.p
