In a recent statement, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, announced the withdrawal of the criminal complaint against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, the unruly passenger involved in an August 10 incident on an Ibom Air flight. Following consultations with Ibom Air and other stakeholders, the complaint against Emmanson has been retracted, and she is expected to be released from Kirikiri Prison within the week. Ms. Emmanson had exhibited remorse during her police statement. Additionally, the lifetime flight ban imposed by Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) on her has been lifted after an appeal, with AON to publicize the resolution details soon.
This decision comes after Emmanson physically assaulted crew and security personnel on the Uyo to Lagos flight, including slapping the purser multiple times and attempting to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had condemned the treatment of Emmanson, describing it as reckless and a violation of human dignity, calling for an independent investigation.
Regarding the August 5 incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the Nigerian government has reduced his flight ban from six months to one month. KWAM 1 had been involved in a confrontation when he refused to surrender a suspected alcohol-containing flask onboard a ValueJet flight and obstructed aircraft movement. After publicly showing remorse, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will withdraw criminal complaints against him. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to engage KWAM 1 as an ambassador to promote proper airport security protocols. Additionally, licenses of the ValueJet captain and co-pilot suspended after the incident will be restored following a one-month ban and professional re-appraisal.

Minister Keyamo emphasized that these decisions were made on compassionate grounds, stressing that the government remains firm on aviation safety and security laws. All relevant government and aviation agencies are directed to conduct retreats for retraining security personnel and airline staff to handle disruptive passengers and improve customer relations.
The resolution seeks to balance enforcement with empathy, sending a clear message that aviation safety is paramount while encouraging improved behavior and accountability among passengers and airline staff alike.

This development follows public outcry and a Senate investigation into recent aviation sector incidents in Nigeria, highlighting escalating concerns about passenger conduct and regulatory enforcement. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority continues to implement rigorous security and cybersecurity protocols to align the aviation sector with international safety standards by October 2025.
The government’s humane yet firm approach aims to restore confidence in Nigeria’s aviation safety and foster a more respectful environment for travelers and staff.
