New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia is facing mounting questions about her background and resume as she transitions into her role as the public face of the Trump administration.
The Katie Zacharia press secretary lawyer credentials controversy centres on her repeated description of herself as a lawyer despite no evidence that she has ever passed the bar exam in any U.S. state or in China.
THE ADMISSION
When questioned Thursday by conservative media outlet Real America’s Voice, Zacharia seemed to acknowledge that she had failed the bar exam, but argued she was accurate in presenting herself as a lawyer.
She said she had registered to take the bar exam but was then “distracted and overwhelmed” by plans to move with her husband to China.
“We just said, ‘Let’s take this time, and I’ll take the bar and see what happens.’ The results are somewhat inconsequential because I knew I wouldn’t need the bar in China, and we left shortly thereafter,” she said.
Zacharia explained that she didn’t retake the bar exam upon returning to the United States due to the birth of her first child .
She said that “many people in the field” had assured her that she could “label myself a lawyer, not attorney at law…and provide legal analysis, not legal advice,” given her law degree and experience in business law gained in China.
“I was very careful how I executed this,” she said.
THE SCRUTINY
There is no evidence to suggest that the 41-year-old press secretary has ever passed the bar exam, required to obtain a license to practice law in the United States, after graduating from Pepperdine University with a law degree.
In her home state of California, it is a misdemeanour to practice law without the appropriate credentials.
The Campaign for Accountability, a political ethics organization, on Wednesday called for the California Bar Association to launch an investigation.
“In California, calling yourself a lawyer without a license isn’t puffery; it’s a crime,” the organization stated in a press release.
THE TRUMP DEFENCE
Trump had described Zacharia as an attorney in the Truth Social post announcing her appointment.
Zacharia holds a law degree from Pepperdine University. She previously worked as a communications adviser for Trump Media and Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, and served as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security.
She held her first press briefing on Tuesday, a 14-minute session in which she answered three questions and announced the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
TRUMP’S DOUBT
On Friday, Trump said he had told Zacharia to reconsider her role, as questions over her legal credentials continued to mount.
Trump suggested that the spokesperson position may not be the right fit for Zacharia, who took up the post earlier this week.
His remarks came the same day Zacharia addressed the controversy, saying the president had not asked whether she passed the bar exam when he appointed her.
She noted that she was hired as press secretary rather than White House counsel, and that her job is to represent the president before the press.

WHY IT MATTERS
The controversy is not about whether a law degree is required to be White House press secretary, it isn’t.
The issue is that Zacharia has presented herself repeatedly on television and social media as a lawyer, and Trump used the term “attorney” to describe her when he announced her appointment .
The scrutiny also raises questions about the vetting process for senior White House positions. If a press secretary’s credentials were not thoroughly checked before her appointment, what does that say about the administration’s broader vetting operation?
For Zacharia, the controversy has overshadowed her first week in the role. Whether she survives it depends on whether Trump decides the scrutiny is a distraction he can afford.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the California Bar Association has been asked to investigate. Zacharia remains in her position.
