WHEN THE VILLAGE FOUGHT BACK – Orire and the Reawakening of Community Courage

There are moments in the life of a nation when an isolated event transcends its immediate circumstances and becomes a defining statement. The recent security breakthrough in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State is one such moment. It was more than the dismantling of a criminal network. It was a loud declaration that fear need not have the final word.

Whether it is called Abúlé in Yorubaland, Obodo in Igboland or Ƙauye in Hausaland, the village remains the cradle of our civilisation. It is where life begins, where values are first taught, where food is grown, where culture is preserved and where the spirit of communal responsibility is nurtured. When the village comes under siege, the nation itself begins to lose its soul.

For years, countless rural communities across Nigeria have lived under the suffocating shadow of kidnappers, bandits and other violent criminal elements. Farmers abandoned fertile lands, not because the soil had failed them, but because returning home alive could no longer be guaranteed. Markets dwindled. Schools emptied. Families deserted ancestral homes. Forests that should have sustained agriculture, conservation and legitimate commerce gradually became sanctuaries for criminal enterprises.

Perhaps prolonged success bred dangerous arrogance. Criminal gangs appeared to assume that every community would eventually submit to intimidation, just as fear had overwhelmed many others. That illusion met its sternest test in Orire. As the Yoruba would say, “Wọ́n kan ìdín nínú iyọ̀.” They encountered the resistance they never anticipated. They met a people who had resolved that enough was enough.

The significance of Orire, therefore, extends far beyond the neutralisation of criminals. It has rekindled a consciousness that communities are not helpless spectators in the defence of their homeland. Working with security agencies through lawful intelligence and vigilance, they can deny criminal networks the anonymity and local support on which they thrive. It has also reminded Nigerians that no criminal enterprise is invincible when the state acts with resolve and communities refuse to surrender.

Yet, this must not become another fleeting success celebrated today and forgotten tomorrow. It should mark the beginning of a coordinated national strategy to reclaim every ungoverned space where criminality has taken root. The pressure mounted in Orire should be sustained and replicated across the country until every forest, every farm settlement and every rural community is restored to lawful authority.

That effort must extend beyond those carrying weapons. Violent crime survives because it is sustained by financiers, informants, suppliers, transporters and collaborators. The young men who, for a handful of notes, guide kidnappers through familiar footpaths or alert them to the movement of security personnel betray not only their communities but also their own future. The sponsors who provide funds, logistics and sanctuary are equally culpable. The law must pursue the entire criminal ecosystem with firmness and without fear or favour.

Traditional institutions cannot be exempt from this moral obligation. The Baálẹ̀, the Mogaji, the village head and every custodian of communal authority occupy positions of sacred trust. Where credible evidence establishes, through due process of law, that any traditional office holder has aided or shielded criminal elements, the consequences should be severe. Prosecution where warranted, and where the law and custom permit, removal from office, should follow. Honour and betrayal cannot occupy the same throne.

The lesson from Orire also imposes fresh responsibilities on government at every level. The Federal Government, the states and the local governments must return to the drawing board on rural security. Nigeria’s forests can no longer be treated as neglected expanses on a map. Forestry services should be restored to their original mission, with trained personnel returning to field operations rather than remaining confined to office routines. Forest Guards should receive professional training, appropriate equipment and close integration with the nation’s security architecture. The timber trade and other forest-based commercial activities should equally come under stricter regulatory and security oversight to ensure that legitimate enterprise does not become a convenient cover for criminal operations.

Local government autonomy must equally find practical expression in the security and economic revival of rural communities. Councils should invest in protecting farming communities, maintaining rural infrastructure and supporting the safe return of agriculture to areas that have long been abandoned through fear. Food security begins with securing those who produce the food.

Orire has taught Nigeria a lesson that must never be forgotten. Criminals succeed not because they are stronger than the state, but because society sometimes allows fear to become more powerful than collective resolve. That narrative has begun to change.

The task before Nigeria is therefore larger than defeating criminals. It is about restoring confidence to every Abúlé, every Obodo and every Ƙauye. It is about ensuring that the child can once again walk to school without fear, the farmer can cultivate his land in peace, and the village can reclaim its rightful place as the heartbeat of our national life.

For when the village fights back and the nation stands firmly behind it criminality begins to lose its sanctuary, and hope returns home.
