When Lion Rules Meet Family Ties: The Strange Story of Ginger

There are rules in nature, and then there is Ginger.

For years, the ageing male lion roamed the wild in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi, surviving into an age when many male lions would already have been displaced by younger and stronger rivals.

Then came the unusual part. ValidViewNetwork reports that Ginger was eventually accepted into a coalition led by his own sons, the Guvu males, despite the highly territorial nature of adult male lions.

That is where the story becomes particularly interesting from an ethological point of view.

Male lions do not ordinarily operate on the basis of family sentiment as humans understand it. Their social system is shaped by territory, reproductive opportunity, competition and survival. Young males normally leave their natal pride when they mature.

Coalitions of males may then challenge resident males, take over territories and attempt to secure reproductive access to females.

An ageing male can therefore become vulnerable when his physical strength declines. The logic appears simple: the stronger male stays, the weaker male leaves.

But Ginger seems to have complicated that neat equation.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that photographs and wildlife accounts have shown the elderly lion living alongside his three sons, popularly known as the Guvu males, in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi.

One account describes Ginger as having lost most of his teeth because of his advanced age, yet still surviving with the apparent support of his sons.

And that raises an interesting question about animal behaviour. Are all social relationships in nature reducible to competition?

Animal societies are governed by evolved behavioural tendencies, but those tendencies operate within changing ecological and social circumstances.

Kinship can matter. Familiarity can matter. Coalition structure can matter. Individual variation can matter too.

What Ginger’s story does not prove is that lions suddenly abandon territorial instincts because they feel sentimental about their fathers.

That would be a very human interpretation of a lion’s behaviour. But it does demonstrate why ethologists are careful about turning behavioural tendencies into absolute laws.

Nature has patterns. Nature also has exceptions. And sometimes the exception is an old lion sitting among the very males that, according to the familiar script, should have replaced him.

Perhaps the funniest question is this: Who says rules must be followed at all times?

And who says nature and nurture cannot occasionally meet somewhere in the middle, negotiate a little and compromise when emotions, kinship or social bonds are involved?
