Airport Imbroglio: Ayinde Marshall Gets Six Months Ban

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a six-month ban on renowned Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1, preventing him from flying from any Nigerian airport. The ban follows a serious altercation involving the artist and officials of ValueJet Airlines at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

According to Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the ban is a direct response to KWAM 1’s unruly behavior during boarding of a ValueJet flight to Lagos. The musician allegedly attempted to board the flight with a flask containing an unidentified liquid substance, which aviation security officials later identified as alcohol. Despite repeated warnings by Aviation Security personnel and the flight captain, KWAM 1 reportedly refused to comply with the rules prohibiting liquids exceeding 100ml in hand luggage.

The situation escalated when the musician spilled the contents of the flask on an airline security officer and refused to vacate the aircraft door area after boarding was completed. This prompted the flight captain to close the door and the musician was subsequently escorted away by security personnel for investigation, after which he was released.

The disturbance further escalated the following day when KWAM 1 physically obstructed a ValueJet aircraft on the tarmac as it taxied for takeoff, narrowly escaping being hit by the plane’s wing after ducking just in time. This reckless action endangered everyone involved and violated critical aviation safety protocols. In response, the NCAA suspended the licenses of the pilot and co-pilot of the flight for breaching mandatory pre-departure clearance procedures.

NCAA emphasized that no individual is exempt from aviation rules designed to ensure safety for all. “Everybody involved in this will be brought to book. No one is above the rules,” Achimugu said, adding that the authority is taking steps to hold all responsible parties, including the musician, accountable.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also condemned the incident and stated that ongoing investigations aim to safeguard operational integrity and prevent any compromise of aviation safety standards regardless of the individuals involved.

In reaction, KWAM 1’s media aide described reports against the musician as exaggerated and misleading, denying that the liquid was alcohol and asserting that the musician was wrongfully portrayed as a threat to safety. The musician also reportedly declined a private jet offer arranged by airline executives as a conciliatory gesture.

This high-profile incident has sparked wide public discourse on aviation safety compliance and the consequences of disrupting airport operations. The NCAA is also forwarding the case to legal authorities for potential prosecution.
