The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has made a public return to official duties in Abuja after a brief medical leave abroad.
Edun, who was reported to be seriously ill and unable to move his hands and knees following a stroke, was recently sighted at a business event in Abuja on Sunday, October 19, 2025. The event, organized by a government corporation, involved strategic engagements with a foreign delegation exploring investment opportunities in Nigeria.
A video released by President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson, Sunday Dare, captured the minister interacting with delegates and senior officials, signaling the resumption of his responsibilities. Edun was heard sharing that he took a few days off to rest but prefers engaging in public activities, enjoying exhibitions that showcase Nigerian artists.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters and other outlets had speculated that Edun’s health had deteriorated to the point of hospitalization abroad, with rumors of paralysis raising concerns about his capacity to continue in office. The Presidency had initially confirmed his illness and temporary unavailability, with Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso deputizing for him at key international meetings like the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings.
Despite speculation about a possible replacement, the Presidency dismissed such reports, affirming there are no plans to replace Edun. His return after medical treatment abroad has reassured stakeholders about his health status and ongoing service as Finance Minister since his appointment on August 16, 2023, and swearing-in on August 21, 2023.
