OSOGBO — Tragic violence erupted in the Itaolokan area of Osogbo, Osun State, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf. The incident unfolded following a courtesy visit by Governor Ademola Adeleke and his nephew, Afrobeats star David Adeleke (Davido), to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
Palace Confrontation Triggers Chain Reaction
According to the Osun State Police Command, the confrontation began at the entrance of the Ataoja’s palace. A suspected member of the Eye Confraternity and ex-convict, identified as Adebayo Taoreed (alias “Small Rugged”), allegedly tried to force his way toward Davido. Security personnel guarding the music star resisted the attempt, sparking a tense altercation.
The standoff quickly escalated as local gang members gathered around the venue, temporarily blocking the palace gates. Security details managed to disperse the crowd and ensure the safe departure of the official convoy.
However, shortly after leaving the palace grounds, members of the fleeing gang reportedly opened fire in the nearby Itaolokan area, fatally wounding Mr. Yusuf. Police officers dispatched to the scene rushed the victim to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where medical personnel confirmed his death.
Official Responses and Investigation
Speaking on the incident, police spokesperson Biodun Ojelabi confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway. The Police Commissioner assigned to the Osun election, Samuel Etaifo, strongly condemned the violence and assured the public that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing the perpetrators.
Davido addressed the situation publicly, clarifying that the conflict had no connection to his team or the governor. Writing on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he noted:
“It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us! The pple love excellency!”
Political Background
The violence marred what was meant to be a ceremonial visit following the recent conclusion of the Osun State governorship election. Governor Adeleke was visiting traditional rulers to present his Certificate of Return.
The election season was marked by tension, with rival political factions raising concerns over political violence. Addressing these challenges, state authorities announced plans for relief initiatives, including an endowment fund to support families affected by electoral violence.
Law enforcement agencies maintain that operations are ongoing to track down Adebayo Taoreed and all accomplices involved in the murder.
