The United States government has renewed its strict warning to Nigerian students studying in the US, emphasizing that skipping classes, dropping out, or abandoning academic programs without notifying school authorities can result in immediate revocation of their student visas. This caution was highlighted by Richard Mills, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, during a recent visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in Abuja.
Ambassador Mills underscored that compliance with the terms of a student visa is paramount. He stressed that student visa holders must remain enrolled and actively engaged in their academic programs. Failure to do so not only risks visa cancellation but could also lead to deportation and permanent ineligibility for future US visas. He further warned that overstaying the permitted duration in the US could result in deportation and a lifetime ban from entering the country.
The ambassador elaborated on the visa application process, urging applicants to provide accurate information regarding the purpose of their travel, funding plans, and ties to Nigeria ensuring they return after their studies. “It’s not just a piece of paper that guarantees entry into the US; it’s your understanding of the visa conditions and your commitment to those terms,” he said.
The US Embassy in Nigeria had earlier posted an advisory warning students about strict adherence to visa terms, reminding them to maintain enrollment, attend all classes, and seek school authority permission before dropping any course or reducing their study load. The embassy also highlighted that misuse of visas, such as skipping classes or leaving programs without notification, could disqualify students from future US visa applications.
This warning aligns with broader US immigration efforts to prevent abuse of student visas, uphold security, and maintain the integrity of visa programs. It comes amid tightened US visa policies for Nigerians, including reductions in visa validity and changes based on reciprocal visa agreements.
Responding to these developments, Nigeria’s Minister Mohammed Idris affirmed ongoing collaboration with the US to ensure clear communication on visa rules and to support Nigerians in complying with international travel regulations.
Both the US Ambassador and Nigerian officials reiterated that the measures are not targeted at Nigerians but are part of a global effort to enhance security and lawful travel between the two countries. Nigerians seeking US visas are advised to be truthful, comply fully with visa terms, and consult official embassy resources for guidance on visa policies and responsibilities.
