MOSCOW/WASHINGTON — The United States and international health observers are closely monitoring developments in Russia’s Siberian region after the sudden death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker sparked a localized quarantine and conflicting official statements.
Darya Shipilova, a technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, passed away on October 2 at a regional hospital in Shelekhov following a brief illness characterized by severe respiratory symptoms. Unconfirmed local media reports suggested her death followed an accidental exposure after a test tube containing the pathogen Yersinia pestis broke in the facility.
The incident triggered rapid containment measures. Russian authorities placed parts of the local hospital under strict quarantine and put nearly 200 individuals who came into contact with Shipilova under medical observation. Public events in the region were temporarily canceled, and regional aluminum plants advised workers to wear protective masks as security services assisted with medical transports.
However, official messaging from Russian authorities has been mixed. While Alexey Tsydenov, the head of the neighboring Buryatia region, initially stated that the worker had died of the plague before editing his remarks to say she “possibly” succumbed to the disease, Russia’s federal health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, attributed the death officially to “pneumonia of unknown aetiology”. The agency insisted that initial testing found no microorganisms linked to her professional work and described the broader epidemiological situation as stable.
Speaking on Monday ahead of a diplomatic trip to Europe, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the incident, stating that Washington is keeping a close eye on the situation.
”We’re watching and monitoring it closely,” Rubio said. “I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus and a cause just to keep an eye on it.” He added that while travel between the US and Russia is currently limited, biological containment failures require vigilance to prevent rapid cross-border transmission.
Independent epidemiologists and virologists have urged calm, noting that while pneumonic plague is the most severe and contagious form of the disease—capable of spreading via respiratory droplets and becoming fatal within 24 hours if untreated. Experts have characterized the event as an isolated, albeit serious, occupational mishap with a low likelihood of a wider outbreak.
